SILVIO GAZZANIGA
THE SCULPTOR WHO CREATED THE SOCCER WORLD CUP TROPHY

This is the story of sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga, the man who created the legendary Football World Cup Trophy in 1971.

Maestro Gazzaniga was born on 23 January 1922 in Milan, Italy.

Silvio and my father Sergio were closest friends.
They started working together at a young age, fought together in World War II, opposed fascism, sent to exile in Switzerland, and reunited with their families at the end of the war.

Silvio’s wife Elsa and my mother Maria were also closest friends.
When I was born, Elsa was the first person to hold me in her arms.
Their daughter Gabriella and I grew up together, and shared our youth like brother and sister.

Gabriella is an accomplished artist, and her paintings on wood are exhibited in several art galleries.

Silvio passed away on 31 October 2016 in our beloved Milan.

On 19 July 2026, at Fort Worth, Texas at Dickies Arena, the World Cup Trophy will be handed over to the captain of world champion team.

Please read the fascinating story of Silvio’s life, and share it.
