THIS IS RUGBY - HISTORY

The name of the game is Rugby Football.
Started in 1845 at the Rugby public school in England.
The governing body is World Rugby.
The greatest tournaments are the World Cup and the Six Nations.
Twickenham is the Home of Rugby and has a magnificent museum dedicated to the history of the game.

The Six Nations 2022 ended last Saturday 19 March.
France won the tournament with a Grand Slam (five wins out of five matches).

THIS IS RUGBY - THE RULES

The Laws of the Game are made by World Rugby.
They are reviewed/modified each year.
They are published in an attractive, colourful 156 pages book.
There are 21 laws for rugby 15.

Contrary to what many believe, there is no such a rule that states the ball must be passed backwards.
The rule states not forward.

THIS IS RUGBY - PLAYERS + OFFICIALS

The field of play is 94 to 100 X 68 to 70 metres.
Touch-in-goal line 6 to 22 metres.
2 halves of 40 mins.
Time is halted during injuries and TMO reviews of infringements and tries.
There are no time-outs.
15 men in each team.
8 men replacements, at any time during the match.
Replacements can be temporary or permanent.
1 referee.
2 lines referees or touch judges.
1 or more TMO.
The referee is the sole judge.
Yellow card for serious infringements = 10 minutes off.
Brutal infringements = red card.
There is no replacement for players sent out following a red card.

THIS IS RUGBY - SCORING

5 points for a try.
2 points for a try conversion.
3 points for a drop kick.
3 points for a penalty kick.
There are four manners to use a penalty:
kick for a goal from a place kick
a scrum
quick penalty to bring ball into open play
kick for line touch.

THIS IS RUGBY - THE MATCH

The referee talks to the two captains before match.
The referee and the line judges enter the pitch last.
The referee talks to players and continuously warns players on possible infringements.
Only the captains may talk to the referee.
The referee is addressed to as Sir.
The referee addresses the players to as Gentlemen.
Nobody dares to question the referee, all decisions are immediately obeyed.
There is no player’s names on the shirt.
The shirts are numbered from 1 to 23.
The player’s number identifies the role and position.
There are 8 forwards and 7 backs.
The Man of the Match is nominated a few minutes before the final whistle.
The winners play tribute to the losers and tank them for playing.
The losers reciprocate.
Both teams play tribute to the referee and line judges and thank them.
The crowd mix.
